Contagion (2011)

Dir: Steven Soderbergh | USA | 102 minutes

Two of the best shots in modern cinema: the coroner peels Paltrow's scalp over her eyes - a further obstruction of vision, even beyond death - and then Soderbergh cuts to an angle that denies the examiner's pov, the "proof" of looking. Brakhage reminds us that autopsy is The Act of Seeing with One's Own Eyes, but in Contagion we're warned that vision alone does not lead to understanding. The dead still have eyes; the camera only sees what it is made to see. The final emotion of this scene is fear.
